The Minerals Management Bureau is responsible for leasing and managing approximately 1,742 oil and gas leases on 719,000 acres of the available 6.2 million acres of school trust lands and approximately 5,632 acres of other state-owned land throughout Montana.
The Department conducts four lease sales each year for oil and gas leases on state land. Tracts can be nominated by completing and returning a lease application form.
